May…

is the month for sunshine and light green leaves, chirping birds and bounding rabbits ready for longer days. Tulips fold into their leaves while rosebuds slowly appear; as such the elusive days of school that wave goodbye to another year.

LIBRARY

Announcement!

I’m looking for a few volunteers to help run the summer reading program at Standley Lake Library.  The volunteers can currently be in grades 6-12 grades, i.e. you must be at least in 7th grade come this fall.
Your duties – you will help sign people up (all ages) for the summer reading program, you will give them their free book or journal when they sign up. You will explain the summer reading program to them.  This summer the library’s goal is for Jefferson County (collectively) to read 1,000,001 minutes.  Each person will decide what their own goal is, it could be 60 minutes a day or 60 minutes a week. It will be up to them.  There will be weekly prize drawings. As long as someone logs a few minutes that week, they will be eligible for the drawing.  Prizes are donations from businesses that range in value from $25-$100. There will be anywhere from 25-65 prizes given away each week for the county as a whole.
Volunteers will also explain the upcoming programs and if they are interested they can assist at running both children’s and teen programs.
I’m attaching the volunteer application. You need to discuss this with your parents and then turn the form into any person that works at Standley Lake.  There are paper copies of the application in the teen room.
Why volunteer – it’s fun! You will also receive community service hours that will look good on job applications and college applications or for the National Honor Society or other programs you are involved with that require community service.
Please let me know if you have any questions. I’m hoping to have enough volunteers that after the initial two week rush of signups that I will have two teen volunteers for each two hour shift.  I hope to schedule you for 1-2 two hour shifts per week. Of course, you can have time off for summer camps, vacations, etc. but you will be responsible for communicating that too many in a timely manner.
Training sessions will be toward the end of May.
I hope to hear from you.  Thanks,
Pam
